Frequently asked questions
Answers about setting up Topline, speed and layout, scheduling and page targeting, closing bars, pricing, and the data the app keeps.
Getting started
How do I set up Topline?
Install the app and open it. Choose a template, such as Free shipping or Sale, or start from scratch. Adjust the message, colors, pages and schedule, then save the bar.
Then turn on the app embed: click Open theme editor in the app’s setup guide. Your theme editor opens with the “Announcement bar” app embed already switched on, so click Save there. The bar is now on your storefront.
Which themes does Topline work with?
Topline runs as a theme app embed, so it works with Shopify themes that support app embeds, such as Dawn and other Online Store 2.0 themes. Your theme files are never edited: the embed is listed in the theme editor under Theme settings › App embeds, and switching it off removes the bar. Headless storefronts built with Hydrogen or another custom frontend are not supported.
Will Topline slow down my store or shift the page?
The bar is in place before the page first appears, so nothing on the page jumps when it shows. A top bar sits above your theme’s header and scrolls away with the page, so a sticky header keeps working. A bottom bar stays fixed at the bottom of the screen.
The bar’s script is printed into the page, so no script file is downloaded, and it makes no network requests. When you have no bar turned on, Topline adds nothing to your pages.
Your bars
Can I schedule a bar?
Yes. Give a bar a start and an end time. Both are in your store’s timezone, which the editor shows next to the fields, so a sale that ends at midnight ends at midnight store time, wherever the visitor is. Leave both empty to show the bar right away and keep it until you turn it off.
Can I show a bar only on some pages?
Yes. Show a bar on all pages, the home page only, product pages, collection pages, the cart page, or specific pages. For specific pages, list one path per line, such as /collections/sale or /pages/about, and end a path with * to include every page below it: /products/* covers every product page. Language prefixes such as /fr are ignored, so a path also covers the other language versions of a page.
Can visitors close the bar, and for how long?
If you allow it, the bar shows a close button, labelled for screen readers. A closed bar stays hidden in that browser tab until the tab is closed. Nothing about the visitor is stored: the tab only keeps a note that the bar was closed.
In your theme editor, closed bars always show, so you can see what you set up.
How many bars can I have?
As many as you need: there is no limit on the number of bars. Several bars can be on at once, for example one at the top of every page and another at the bottom of product pages. Bars in the same position are shown one under the other.
Pricing
Is Topline free?
Yes. Topline is free to install, with every feature included, from rotating and scrolling bars to scheduling and page targeting. There are no plans, no subscription and no trial.
What is the small ShopOpsy icon on my bar?
The first bar on a page shows a small ShopOpsy icon, 24 × 24 px with no text. It is not a link, loads nothing and sends no data.
If you prefer your bars without it, Remove for $10 on the app’s home page asks Shopify to approve a one-time charge of $10. Once approved, the icon is removed for good on your store. If you uninstall and reinstall the app, Shopify asks for the charge again.
Data and privacy
Does Topline track visitors or set cookies?
No. The bar uses no analytics, counts no views or clicks, sends no requests to ShopOpsy or anyone else, and sets no cookies. Topline stores no data about your customers or visitors.
When a visitor closes a bar, their browser keeps ab-closed: followed by the bar’s ID, with the value 1, in session storage. It contains no identifier, is never sent anywhere and disappears when the tab is closed. It only remembers the visitor’s request to close the bar.
What happens to my data if I uninstall?
When you uninstall Topline, all of your store’s data is deleted from the app’s database: bars, messages, preferences and sessions. Shopify removes the copy of your active bars kept in your store, an app-data metafield, together with the installation. 48 hours later, Shopify sends a shop data erasure request and the app deletes anything that is left.
