Shopify charges three kinds of fees: a monthly plan subscription, a processing fee on each card payment, and a third-party transaction fee when an order is paid through a provider other than Shopify Payments. Apps and paid themes come on top. On Shopify’s US pricing page in October 2026, the Basic plan costs $39 a month ($29 billed yearly) and an online card payment through Shopify Payments costs 2.9% + 30¢.

Some online payments cost more than the headline rate:
- Premium cards (business cards and American Express) cost 3.5% + 30¢ on Basic down to 2.95% + 30¢ on Plus.
- International cards add 1% on every US plan.
- Currency conversion: on payments in a currency other than your payout currency, Shopify charges a conversion fee of 1.5% for US stores and 2% in other Shopify Payments regions. Since 6 April 2026 it’s worked out on the gross order amount.
Apps and theme purchases appear on your Shopify bill as third-party charges.
When do you pay the third-party transaction fee?
Shopify charges it on payments a third-party provider processes, even when Shopify Payments is active (Help Center):
- Payments through Shopify Payments, Shop Pay, Shop Pay Installments and manual methods such as cash on delivery or bank transfer carry no transaction fee, and neither do POS orders.
- PayPal is exempt when Shopify Payments is your primary provider.
- On stores created on or after 12 May 2025, the part of an order paid with store credit or a gift card is charged the fee.
- The fee is worked out over 30 days as [(products − discounts) + tax + shipping] × your plan’s rate, and it comes on top of what the provider charges.
If a direct card provider runs alongside Shopify Payments, Shop Pay and local payment methods processed by Shopify Payments cost 1.25% more than the standard rate.
How do you use this Shopify fees calculator?
- Pick a plan or keep All plans, then choose monthly or yearly billing.
- Enter your monthly sales, including shipping and tax, and your number of orders.
- Split your sales between Shopify Payments online, Shopify POS and any third-party provider; the rest counts as manual payments.
- Optionally add your premium, international and foreign-currency card shares, your provider’s rate and your app and theme spend.
- Outside the US or on custom rates, enter your own under Edit rates.
Which Shopify plan is cheapest for your sales?
A higher plan costs more each month but charges lower rates. With every sale paid online through Shopify Payments and monthly billing, Grow costs less than Basic from about $33,000 a month in sales, and Advanced beats Grow from about $147,000. Third-party payments bring those points down, because the transaction fee drops more between plans than the card rate. The comparison table shows the break-even for your mix.
Where can you see your actual Shopify fees?
- Your card rates: in the admin, go to Settings > Payments, click Manage in the Shopify Payments section and check Standard rates (Help Center).
- Fees on each payout: go to Finance > Payouts and open a payout, or export transactions as a CSV file (Help Center).
- Third-party transaction fees: go to Settings > Billing and open a bill under Past bills.
What doesn’t this calculator include?
- Taxes on fees. Shopify adds tax to Shopify Payments fees for businesses in Switzerland, the EU, Australia and Singapore.
- Refunds and chargebacks. Card fees and third-party transaction fees aren’t returned when you refund an order, and a chargeback adds a fee on top of the disputed amount. Your refund policy sets who pays return shipping and any restocking fee.
- Other payment methods. Shop Pay Installments carries a higher fee, and PayPal Wallet, local payment methods and in-person manual payments have their own rates.
- Add-ons and offers. POS Pro, the Marketplace Connect fee beyond 50 synced orders a month, trial pricing and promotional credits.
- Order size by channel. Orders are split across payment methods in proportion to sales.

Frequently asked questions
Is yearly billing cheaper on Shopify?
For the plans with a published yearly price, yes. In the US, yearly billing saves $120 a year on Basic ($29 instead of $39 a month). Shopify’s US page showed two yearly prices for Grow and Advanced in October 2026, so the saving is $192 or $312 a year on Grow and $480 or $1,200 on Advanced, depending on the price you’re offered. Shopify charges the full year upfront, and plan charges are generally non-refundable (pricing plans and billing overview).
Do Shopify fees depend on my country?
Yes. Plan prices, card rates and some fees vary by location. Shopify bills subscriptions in US dollars, euros, British pounds or Indian rupees depending on where you are (billing overview), and the currency conversion fee is 1.5% for US stores but 2% in other Shopify Payments regions. Copy the rates from Settings > Payments in your admin into Edit rates.
What changes if I move from a third-party provider to Shopify Payments?
Once Shopify Payments is active, the orders it processes carry Shopify’s card rate and no third-party transaction fee. If you later switch back to another processor, the transaction fees start again, on top of that processor’s own fees (Shopify Payments fees).
Does Shopify charge fees on POS sales?
Card payments taken in person through Shopify Payments use the in-person rate, which is 2.6% + 10¢ on Basic in the US, and third-party transaction fees don’t apply to POS orders. Shopify’s pricing page also lists a separate in-person manual rate of 3.5% + 10¢ on Basic, Grow and Advanced, and the POS Pro add-on at $89 a month per location.
How do I estimate fees on Shopify Plus?
Shopify lists Plus from $2,300 a month in the US, with 2.25% + 30¢ online, 2.3% + 10¢ in person and a 0.2% third-party transaction fee. Plus terms are agreed with Shopify, so enter your contract’s numbers under Edit rates. On Plus, third-party transaction fees are shown on your organization’s billing page, where you can export a bill (Help Center).
