Shopify Variant Limit: 2,048 Variants, 3 Options and Workarounds
The Shopify variant limit is now 2,048 variants and three options per product. What counts toward it, where 100 or 250 still apply in themes and apps, and what to do when you need more.

On this page
The Shopify variant limit is 2,048 variants per product, with up to three options (such as size, color and material) per product. Shopify raised the limit from 100 to 2,048 for all merchants on 15 October 2025, and both the Shopify admin and the GraphQL Admin API support it.
The old 100-variant cap still applies in the legacy REST Admin API and in some themes, apps and sales channels that haven't been updated, and theme code that reads product.variants in Liquid sees at most 250 variants. If you need more than 2,048 variants or a fourth option, split the product, use combined listings on Shopify Plus, or capture the extra choice as a custom option with line item properties.
What are Shopify's variant and option limits?
These are the numbers in Shopify's documentation as of October 2026.
| Limit | Value | Where it applies |
|---|---|---|
| Variants per product | 2,048 | Admin and GraphQL Admin API, all plans |
| Options per product | 3 | Admin, CSV (Option1 to Option3) |
| Values per option | No limit, per the GraphQL Admin API | The 2,048-variant cap is what limits you |
| Media per product | 250 | Media items such as images, shared by the product's variants |
| Variants in the REST Admin API | 100 | Legacy API that older apps may still use |
Variants in Liquid product.variants | 250 when unpaginated | Theme code |
| Variants in the Ajax product JSON | 250 | Theme JavaScript |
| Combined listing (Plus) | 60 products, 3 extra options, 2,048 variants by default | Online Store |
| New variants per day | 10,000 once a store has 500,000 variants | CSV and apps; not on Plus |
| Product CSV file size | 15 MB | Admin import |
Can Shopify products have more than 100 variants now?
Yes. For most of Shopify's history, a product could have at most 100 variants, which is why older guides and apps still talk about a "Shopify 100 variants" limit. The change came in two steps:
- April 2024: Shopify updated the GraphQL Admin API with new product APIs built for high-variant products. Its October 2025 post on the Shopify blog explains that the data for high-variant products no longer fit the REST Admin API's design, so apps had to migrate to the new APIs first.
- 15 October 2025: the Shopify Changelog announced products with up to 2,048 variants, and the developer changelog says this applies to all merchants. Setting up variants in the admin stayed the same.
The REST Admin API never got the higher number. Shopify's REST product variant reference still says three options and 100 variants, and calls REST a legacy API since 1 October 2024. The developer changelog warns that apps not on the current GraphQL product APIs may give a "downgraded or broken experience" above 100 variants. So when something stops at 100 today, the cause is usually a theme, an app or a sales channel, not Shopify's product limit.
What counts toward the variant limit?
Shopify's variants guide describes a variant as one combination of a product's option values, and you manage inventory for each variant separately. Each variant also has its own price and SKU, which is why the product CSV has one set of those columns per variant. In practice:
- Every existing combination counts once. Multiply the values of each option to see the worst case. 12 sizes × 20 colors × 8 materials is 1,920 combinations and fits. 15 sizes × 20 colors × 8 materials is 2,400 and doesn't.
- You don't need every combination. You can delete combinations you don't sell, and the Add variant button creates a single variant, according to Shopify's guide to adding variants. The limit is on variants that exist, not the theoretical grid.
- A product without options still has one variant. The GraphQL
productCreatereference creates every product with its initial variant, and Liquid'sproduct.has_only_default_variantis true for products without options, so the count starts at one. - Hidden and sold-out variants still exist. Unpublishing a variant hides it from a sales channel or catalog without deleting it, so it stays one of the product's variants. The same goes for sold-out variants: until you delete a variant, it's still part of the product (see what to do with out-of-stock products).
- Options are a separate limit. Three is the ceiling whatever your variant count. The GraphQL
ProductCreateInputreference says there's no limit on the number of option values, so the 2,048-variant cap is what stops you.
What doesn't count: text customers type in custom option fields (line item properties), metafields and product media. Media has its own cap, though. Shopify's add variants guide allows up to 250 media items, such as images, per product, and each variant can use one item from the product's media list. Past 250 variants, not every variant can have its own image. Our guide to Shopify image sizes helps keep that library light.
How do you add and manage hundreds of variants in the admin?
Adding options works the same way at 5 or 2,000 variants. Shopify's add variants guide gives these steps:
- From your Shopify admin, go to Products and click the product.
- In the Variants section, click + Add options like size or color.
- Enter an Option name and its Option values.
- Optional: click + Add another option, up to three options.
- Click Done, then Save.
Check the arithmetic before adding a value to an existing option: each new value combines with every value of the other options.
Once a product has hundreds of variants, three admin tools save time:
- Search and filter. In the Variants section, click the search and filter icons to find variants by name or option value. Each option gets its own filter, and Clear all resets them (search, filter and group variants).
- Group by. Variants are grouped by an option, with a count per group. Change the grouping under Group by, or change the default by reordering the options.
- Bulk edit. Select variants with the checkboxes, or the topmost checkbox for all of them, and click Bulk edit to change prices, SKUs and other fields in a table (editing variants). Our Shopify bulk editor guide covers columns, metafields and saving large edits.
To stop selling some combinations without deleting them, select the variants, open the horizontal menu and choose Manage publishing. A hidden variant stays in your admin, and you can publish it again later.
How do you import a product with hundreds of variants by CSV?
A product CSV holds one row per variant, and every row of the same product shares the same URL handle. Shopify's CSV column guide confirms a product can have up to three options, written in the Option1, Option2 and Option3 name and value columns. It doesn't list a separate variant cap for CSV files, so plan for the same 2,048 per product and test one large product before a full import. If those variant rows still need SKUs, our free SKU generator builds one per variant from a pattern you set.
At high variant counts, three things matter most:
- Option columns protect your variants. Shopify's import guide says that leaving out Option1 name and Option1 value while updating variant fields replaces the existing variants with a new default variant, and that changing Option1 to Option3 values gives the variants new IDs, which can break apps and feeds that store them.
- Watch the file size. A product CSV can't exceed 15 MB. A few products with 2,000 variants each add up quickly, so import in batches.
- Variant metafields aren't in the CSV. Shopify's CSV guide says variant metafields aren't supported for import or export; edit them in the variant bulk editor instead.
There is also a daily cap on new variants. Shopify's common import issues page says that once a store has 500,000 or more product variants, CSV uploads can create no more than 10,000 new variants in 24 hours, with the error "Daily variant creation limit reached, try again". The REST rate limits page applies the same numbers to every API, and Shopify Plus stores are exempt. The GraphQL productCreate reference still describes a lower throttle (1,000 a day once a store has 50,000 variants), so check the exact error if a big import stops.
For the full routine of exporting, editing and test-importing a variant-heavy file without losing variant data, follow our Shopify product CSV update checklist.
What happens on the storefront when a product has many variants?
The admin handling 2,048 variants doesn't mean your storefront does. Three numbers matter for themes:
- 250 in Liquid. Shopify's Liquid product reference says
product.variantsreturns a maximum of 250 variants when unpaginated. A theme that builds its variant picker by looping over every variant may not see the rest, and Shopify asks theme developers to audit any use ofproduct | jsonas well. - 250 in the Ajax API. The Ajax product endpoint returns at most 250 variants in its
variantsarray. - 100 in some third-party themes. Shopify's add variants guide warns that some third-party themes might not support more than 100 variants.
Shopify's theme guide to supporting high-variant products asks theme developers to render options from product.options_with_values and load variant data only when needed, and names Dawn's variant picker as an example. If your theme is older or heavily customized, ask its developer whether it follows that pattern.
Do apps, sales channels and collections support more than 100 variants?
Shopify's add variants guide lists the known gaps:
- Some theme app extensions, public apps and sales channels might not support more than 100 variants.
- The Stocky app and the legacy Order Printer app don't support more than 100 variants.
- Some custom apps might not, and custom apps on the REST Admin API must move to the GraphQL Admin API.
Collection pages list products, not variants: the Liquid collection object returns the products in a collection, so a high-variant product shows as one item however many variants it has. If you want each color, for example, to show as its own card, it has to be its own product. Combined listings, covered below, let those separate products share one listing.
How do you test a product with more than 100 variants?
- Build the high-variant product as a draft, or test it on a preview of your theme.
- On the product page, select combinations from the end of each option list, not only the first values, because variants late in the order are the ones most likely to be missed by a theme that reads only 250.
- Check that price, image and availability change with each selection, then add a late combination to the cart and check the cart line shows the right options.
- Check every app that reads products: reviews, feeds and marketplaces, inventory, ERP, packing slips and order printing.
- Check the sales channels you publish the product to.
How do you get more than 2,048 variants or 3 options?
Shopify's add variants guide says that for more than 2,048 variants or more than three options you can use a third-party app or customize your theme to capture line item properties. Plus stores can also use combined listings. Here is how the main routes compare.
| Workaround | Use it for | Keeps SKU, stock and price per choice? | Plan |
|---|---|---|---|
| Split into separate products | Large ranges where each choice is stocked | Yes | All plans |
| Combined Listings app | Showing split products as one listing, with extra options | Yes | Plus and enterprise |
| Line item properties (custom options) | Personalization, made-to-measure, free text or uploads | No, it's text on the order | All plans; needs an app or theme code |
| Metafields and metaobjects | Information that isn't a buying choice | Not applicable | All plans |
When should you split the product?
Divide the range by the option that matters least in browsing, such as material or fit, and create one product per value. Each product gets its own 2,048 variants and three options, and every variant keeps a real SKU, price and inventory level. The cost is more product pages, reviews spread across products and more catalog upkeep. Link the siblings with a collection, or with a product reference metafield and a theme that can display it.
How do combined listings work on Shopify Plus?
The Shopify Combined Listings app groups separate child products under one parent listing. It is available only on Plus and enterprise plans, and the limits are:
- Up to 60 products in a combined listing.
- Up to 3 options on the combined listing, in addition to the options in each child product.
- By default, up to 2,048 variants across all child products.
That last point is easy to miss: a combined listing helps with the three-option limit, and its child products can still appear in collections and, per Shopify's developer docs, be merchandised separately. By default, though, it doesn't give one listing more than 2,048 variants. To create one, go to Apps > Combined Listings, click Create combined listing, add the products, name the shared option, give each product its value and click Save.
Combined listings need the Online Store sales channel and display on free Shopify themes from version 15.0.0; other themes may need code changes. They can't be a featured product, part of a bundle or a subscription product, and child products aren't included in Search & Discovery filter results.
When should a choice be a line item property instead of a variant?
When a choice doesn't need its own SKU or stock, such as engraving text, a monogram, a made-to-measure size or an uploaded file, it doesn't have to be a variant. Shopify's product template docs explain that themes capture these as line item properties, using inputs named properties[property-name] inside the product form. The values travel with the cart line, and the cart template docs note that two of the same item with different properties become separate cart lines.
The tradeoffs:
- No inventory per choice. Stock is tracked on the variant, not on what the customer typed.
- No price change on its own. The price comes from the variant. A common workaround for charging extra is a separate add-on product added to the cart with the item, which is how some product options apps handle it. Apps that override a cart line's price with a cart transform
lineUpdateoperation work only on Shopify Plus or development stores, according to the Cart Transform Function API. - App or theme code needed. Check how the properties appear in order notifications and on your packing slips too.
Which options belong in metafields or metaobjects?
Some "options" are really product information: fabric composition, care instructions or fit notes. If a value doesn't change the SKU, price or stock, store it in a product metafield and free up an option slot. Our plain-English guide to Shopify metafields explains how to show them on the product page, and Shopify metaobjects covers reusable entries such as materials.
Metafields also make real options easier to manage. Shopify's category metafields guide explains how to connect a variant option to a category metafield, so renaming an entry such as "black" to "graphite" updates every variant that uses it, and color entries can show as swatches on themes that support them. See Shopify category metafields for the setup.
Variant metafields have a limit of their own: Shopify's variants guide says that, at this time, product variant metafields can't be displayed to customers, although Shopify's Search & Discovery filters guide lets them power storefront filters. The Liquid variant object does expose metafields for custom theme code, but don't plan customer-facing content around variant metafields without checking your theme.
Which workaround should you choose?
If each choice needs its own SKU, stock or price, keep it as a variant and split the product once you pass 2,048 variants or three options. If the choice is free text, a file or made to order, use a line item property. If it only describes the product, use a metafield.
How do you fix common variant limit problems?
| What you see | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Can't add a fourth option | Products are limited to three options | Split the product, or move one option to a line item property or metafield |
| Can't add more option values or variants | The product would pass 2,048 variants | Delete combinations you don't sell, or split the product |
| Some variants can't be selected on the product page | Theme reads product.variants or product JSON, capped at 250 | Ask the theme developer, or update to a theme that supports high-variant products |
| Variants after the 100th missing in an app or feed | App still uses the REST Admin API or a 100-variant design | Contact the developer; REST stays at 100 |
| "Daily variant creation limit reached, try again" | Store-wide daily cap on new variants | Wait until 24 hours after the day's first upload, then import the rest in batches |
| Variants replaced or IDs changed after a CSV import | Option columns missing or option values edited | Compare the file with your export, fix it and follow the CSV checklist |
| Each color doesn't show as its own card in collections | Collections list products, not variants | Split the product, or use combined listings on Plus |
Frequently asked questions
Is the 2,048 variant limit available on every Shopify plan?
Yes. Shopify's developer changelog says the 2,048 limit applies to all merchants. Two related features depend on your plan: the Combined Listings app (Plus and enterprise plans), and the exemption from the daily variant creation limit (Plus).
Can Shopify raise the limit above 2,048 for my store?
Shopify's Help Center doesn't describe a way to request more variants per product. It points to apps, line item properties and combined listings instead. Apps can read a store's own limits through the ShopResourceLimits object, which reports the maximum variants and options per product.
