Shopify Bulk Editor: Edit Products and Variants Without a CSV
Where Shopify’s bulk editor opens, which columns you can add (metafields included), how to bulk edit prices, variants and inventory safely, and when a CSV or a bulk action is the better tool.

On this page
The Shopify bulk editor is a spreadsheet-style table in Shopify admin for changing many products, variants, inventory items, collections or customers in one save. Go to Products, tick the products you want to change, click Bulk edit, add the fields you need with Columns, type or fill in the new values, then click Save. It handles prices, compare-at prices, SKUs, barcodes, inventory, vendor, product type and category, theme templates and any metafield that has a definition. Shopify's documentation describes no undo once you save, so export the selection first. For a supplier price file, a percentage change across the catalog or a file you want to review and keep, a CSV import is the better tool.
The steps below follow Shopify's Help Center as of October 2026. Shopify began rolling out a restyled admin on 15 September 2026, so buttons may sit in slightly different places in your store.
What can you edit with the Shopify bulk editor?
Shopify's bulk editing guide names four lists where the bulk editor opens: Products, Collections, Inventory and Customers. In each one, the items you selected become rows and their properties become columns. The button that opens the editor isn't labelled the same way on every Help Center page, so the table lists the names Shopify uses.
| Where you start | Each row is | Button named in Shopify's docs | Fields you can edit (examples) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Products | A product or a variant | Bulk edit (the metafields guide says Edit products) | Price, compare-at price, SKU, barcodes, product type, product category, vendor, theme template, metafields |
| A product's Variants section | One variant of that product | Bulk edit or Open bulk editor | All variant details, variant metafields, quantities by location |
| Products > Inventory | A variant | Edit variants | Quantities by location, Track quantity, Continue selling when out of stock, price, compare-at price, cost per item, SKU, barcode, weight, HS code, country of origin |
| Products > Collections | A collection | Bulk edit | Theme template, collection metafields |
| Customers | A customer profile | Edit customers | First and last name, tags, email, SMS and WhatsApp marketing consent, customer metafields |
Two gaps are worth knowing before you start. Blog posts, pages and URL redirects no longer have a bulk editor; Shopify's guide points to third-party apps for those. Orders aren't in the bulk editor either: they use bulk actions such as fulfilling, archiving, tagging and printing packing slips.
How do you bulk edit products in Shopify?
Step 1: select the items
- From your Shopify admin, go to Products (or Collections, Inventory or Customers).
- Filter or search the list first, for example by vendor, tag or status, so the selection holds only what you mean to change.
- Select the items. Shopify's bulk actions guide documents these options:
- Tick each item's checkbox, or click one item and Shift-click another to select everything in between.
- Tick the checkbox at the top of the list to select the page.
- To go past one page of results, tick the top checkbox and click Select all 50+ items for the whole store. In a filtered view, open the 50 selected drop-down and click Select all results.
- Click Bulk edit.
Step 2: add the columns you need
Click Columns, tick each property you want in the table and untick the ones you don't. Metafields have their own Metafields section in that list, and Shopify's templates guide puts the theme template under General. Add only what you plan to change: Shopify notes that the more you change at once, the longer the save takes.
Step 3: edit cells quickly
The editor behaves like a spreadsheet. These are the shortcuts Shopify documents:
| To do this | Do this |
|---|---|
| Move between cells | Click a cell, then press the arrow keys |
| Select a range | Click a cell, hold Shift and click the last cell |
| Select scattered cells | Hold Alt (PC) or Command (Mac) and click each cell |
| Give many cells one value | Click and drag across them, then type in the outlined active cell |
| Copy a value up or down | Drag the cell's fill handle over the cells above or below |
| Widen a column | Drag the divider to the right of the column title |
Multi-select works for text, numbers, checkboxes and drop-down menus, which makes it the quickest way to set one product type, template or checkbox value across many rows.
Step 4: save and check
Click Save. If Shopify flags errors, fix the marked cells and click Save again. Then open a few edited products and their storefront pages to confirm the result.
How do you bulk edit variants in Shopify?
Can you edit variants across many products?
In the products bulk editor each row is a product or a variant, so you can change variant prices, SKUs and barcodes for several products in one table. The exception is stock: Shopify says inventory for products with multiple variants is bulk edited only from the Inventory section.
How do you edit all the variants of one product?
Shopify's variant editing guide gives this route:
- From your Shopify admin, go to Products and click the product.
- In the Variants section, tick the variants you want to change, or the topmost checkbox to select them all.
- Click Bulk edit, make your changes and click Save.
For a quick fix, the variants list on the product page also lets you change a variant's image, price and per-location stock directly.
Since October 2025 a product can have up to 2,048 variants, so this per-product editor is the practical way to manage large variant sets. Our Shopify variant limit guide explains that limit and where 100 or 250 still apply.
What about options, deleting variants and hiding them?
- Options and values (such as Size or Color) are added, renamed and deleted in the Variants section of the product page. A product can have at most three options.
- Deleting several variants is a bulk action on the product page.
- Hiding a variant without deleting it is possible since May 2026. Shopify's variant publishing update lets you unpublish individual variants from sales channels and catalogs on the product page, the variant page or in the bulk editor.
How do you bulk edit prices, inventory and other fields?
How do you bulk edit prices and compare-at prices?
- Select the products, or one product's variants, and click Bulk edit.
- Add the Price and Compare-at price columns. Shopify's product details guide ties profit and margin reports to Cost per item, which the inventory bulk editor lists as a column; if your products editor doesn't offer it, use Products > Inventory.
- Enter the new values. For a sale, put the original price in Compare-at price and the new price in Price. Shopify's sale pricing guide says the sale shows only when the compare-at price is higher than the price.
- Click Save, then check a product page and a collection page, because your theme decides how sale prices look.
Three things catch merchants out:
- No percentage tool is documented. Shopify's bulk editor docs cover typing, multi-cell edits and the fill handle, not formulas such as "raise every price by 8%". For that, export a CSV, calculate in a spreadsheet and import it using our CSV update checklist. For one market, a catalog in Markets > Catalogs takes a percentage Price adjustment (catalogs guide).
- Market prices can override yours. The sale pricing guide notes that fixed prices override the prices and compare-at prices set in admin, and the catalogs guide says a price set by hand in a catalog overrides the catalog's percentage. If one market still shows the old price, check its catalog.
- Saved means live. Shopify's product guide says saved changes take effect in your online store immediately. To time a price change for a market, prepare a draft catalog with the new prices and schedule when it goes live with Rollouts, which gained catalog support in October 2026. The catalogs guide notes that a rollout changes only the catalog's status, so edits to a catalog that's already active aren't held back.
How do you bulk edit inventory quantities?
The inventory bulk editing guide gives these steps:
- Go to Products > Inventory.
- If you have several locations, choose one from the location drop-down so only its stock shows.
- Tick the variants and click Edit variants.
- Type the new quantities. When you leave a cell it shows original → new, with increases in green and decreases in red.
- Click Save, review the confirmation dialog, then click Save changes.
The bulk editor sets quantities rather than adjusting them. If a variant has 100 units and you type 150, it ends at exactly 150, and Shopify records no origin or destination, so there's no audit trail of the movement. When you need that history, adjust stock on the Inventory page or the product page instead.
If stock changes while you're editing, for example through an order, Shopify shows an Inventory mismatch dialog when you save. A December 2025 update added these options:
- Save suggested applies your change to the current quantity. If you changed 100 to 150 but a sale left 95, it saves 145.
- Save original saves exactly the number you typed.
- Discard returns you to the editor.
Two more columns matter here. Track quantity must be ticked before you can enter stock for a location. Continue selling when out of stock decides whether a variant can still sell at zero; our guide to Shopify out-of-stock settings helps you choose. Bulk edits also don't activate a product at a location: the quantity is stored, but the product can't be sold or fulfilled from there until you activate it.
How do you bulk edit metafields?
Shopify's metafield bulk editing guide gives these steps for products:
- Go to Products and select the products.
- Click Bulk edit (the guide calls it Edit products).
- Click Columns and, in the Metafields section, tick the metafields you want.
- Edit the cells and click Save.
The same works for variants, collections and customers. Keep in mind:
- Metafields need a definition. Shopify's changelog describes bulk editing for product metafields with definitions (November 2022) and for collection and customer metafields with definitions (February 2023). If a metafield is missing from Columns, check that it has a definition. Our plain-English guide to Shopify metafields explains definitions.
- Variant metafields need the bulk editor. Shopify's CSV guide says product CSV import and export don't support variant metafields, and points to the variant bulk editor with metafield columns instead.
- Values must pass validation. Each value has to match the definition's type and rules. When you add a definition to existing values that don't match, Shopify's validation errors guide says you're sent to the bulk editor to fix them, and the metafield can't be used until every value matches. See how to fix Shopify metafield validation errors.
Before filling blanks across a catalog, decide which fields are actually required with our metafield audit checklist. ShopOpsy is also building Metafield Error Scanner, an app to scan a catalog for missing, empty or invalid metafield values; it isn't available yet.
How do you change tags, vendor, type, category, status and template?
- Tags: select the products, open the horizontal menu icon (...), click Add tags or Remove tags, choose the tags and click Save. Shopify's tags guide allows up to 250 tags per product, each up to 255 characters. Plus stores can have unlimited product tags, but only 250 display when bulk editing tags.
- Vendor: Shopify's vendor guide says you can change vendors in bulk with the bulk editor or a CSV. Filter the product list by vendor first.
- Product type: add Product type through Columns, enter the type, and click + Add if it's a new one (product types guide).
- Product category: add Product category through Columns, then search for the category or click through its levels (taxonomy guide). The category unlocks category metafields such as color or material.
- Status: Shopify's product guide says you can archive several products at once with a bulk action. Its bulk editing docs don't list a Status column, so check Columns in your admin before planning a status change there. Archived products stay in their collections but are hidden from your online store, and unarchiving sets a product to Draft.
- Theme template: under Columns > General, tick Template. Click the first and Shift-click the last Template cell, choose the template in the first cell, then click Save. Only templates in your live theme are offered.
Can you bulk edit SEO titles and meta descriptions?
Shopify's bulk editing docs don't list search engine listing fields among the editor's columns, and its product SEO steps work one product at a time. Check Columns in your own admin. If no SEO fields appear, use the product CSV: its SEO title column takes up to 70 characters and SEO description up to 320. Export, edit those columns, keep URL handle and Title, and import as the CSV checklist describes.
To hide many products from search engines, sitemaps and your store's own search, Shopify's searchability guide documents a bulk editor link for an seo.hidden integer metafield (1 hides a product, 0 shows it). Hidden products still appear in collections and recommendations. Create that metafield definition first, as the guide describes, then open this link with your store's name in place of STORENAME:
https://admin.shopify.com/store/STORENAME/bulk?edit=metafields.seo.hidden%3Anumber&resource_name=ProductCan you scan barcodes into the bulk editor?
Since a September 2026 update, a variant can hold up to 20 barcodes. With a scanner in keyboard mode, select a Barcodes cell and scan: the barcode is entered and the selection moves to the next row. A scan replaces any barcode the variant already has, so use this pass on variants without one. Our guide to Shopify barcodes covers adding several codes per variant, GS1 numbers and labels.
Which customer details can you bulk edit?
Shopify's customer management guide says the customer bulk editor changes names, tags, the email, SMS and WhatsApp marketing consent fields, and metafields; addresses, phone numbers and tax exemptions need the profile or a CSV. Mark customers as accepting marketing only if they agreed to it.
What limits apply to a large bulk edit?
- No published maximum. Shopify doesn't state a cap on items per bulk edit. Its 2022 revamp added editing more than 50 products at a time, and Select all can take in every item in the store. More items and more columns mean a slower save, and Shopify's tag troubleshooting suggests smaller batches when a bulk edit fails.
- No undo is documented. Before a big change, click Export on the Products page and choose Products you have selected (export guide), so you keep the old values.
- One invalid value blocks the whole save, even in a hidden column. Shopify also recommends Chrome, Firefox or Safari over Microsoft Edge, whose URL length limit can cause errors.
- Storefront search lags. Shopify's searchability guide says products updated through bulk actions can take several hours to appear in search results, while single edits usually take seconds.
- Deleting is permanent. Shopify's product guide says deleted products can't be restored, and that includes products removed with the Delete selected products bulk action. Archive products you might sell again.
Bulk editor, bulk actions or CSV: which should you use?
| Question | Bulk editor | Bulk actions | CSV import |
|---|---|---|---|
| What it does | A different value per row, field by field | One action applied to every selected item | Overwrites matching products from a file you prepared, if you choose to overwrite |
| Typical jobs | Prices, SKUs, barcodes, vendor, type, category, templates, metafields | Tags, collections, channel availability, archive, delete, run a Shopify Flow workflow | Supplier price lists, formula-based changes, hundreds of reviewed rows |
| Variant metafields | Yes, from a product's variant editor | No | Not supported in the product CSV |
| Inventory | Sets exact quantities, no audit trail | Update quantity and sold-out selling on the Inventory page | Product CSV for a single location; the inventory CSV with several locations |
| Undo | None documented; export first | None documented; deleted products can't be restored | Re-import an export taken before the change |
In short: use the bulk editor when you can filter to the items in admin and each needs its own value; use a bulk action when every item gets the same change; and use a CSV when the data starts outside Shopify or the change is a formula. Our CSV update checklist explains how to import without deleting variant data.
How do you fix common Shopify bulk editor problems?
| What you see | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| "Update the invalid values, then save again" | A variant is missing a required SKU, or a metafield value fails validation, possibly in a hidden column | Add the SKU and metafield columns and review them; with many definitions, fix metafield errors first |
| A metafield isn't in Columns | It probably has no definition | Create a metafield definition, then reopen the editor |
| Can't change stock for a multi-variant product | Product editor doesn't edit that inventory | Use Products > Inventory or the product's variant editor |
| A variant is missing from Inventory | Its quantity isn't tracked | Turn on Track quantity on the product or variant page |
| Track quantity is greyed out | The variant is in an unfulfilled order or an active transfer | Finish the order or transfer first |
| Variants of one product are scattered | The editor keeps the Inventory page's sort order | Sort the Inventory list before opening the editor |
| Stock saved but the item can't sell there | The product isn't active at that location | Activate the product at the location |
| New price doesn't show in one market | A fixed or catalog price overrides it | Update the price in that market's catalog |
| Sale price doesn't show | Compare-at price isn't higher than price, or the theme hides it | Raise the compare-at price; check theme settings |
| Barcode scans don't register | Column hidden, several cells selected, row filtered, save running or no scanner suffix | Fix the setting and scan again |
Frequently asked questions
Can I undo a bulk edit in Shopify?
Not from the bulk editor itself; Shopify documents no undo after saving. If you exported the products beforehand, re-import the columns you changed from that file, testing one product first. Without an export, you'll need to re-enter the old values.
Do I need an app to bulk edit products in Shopify?
Not for products, variants, inventory, collections or customers, which the built-in editor covers. Shopify points to third-party apps for pages, blog posts and URL redirects, and apps are also an option for features its docs don't describe, such as formulas or scheduled edits.
