A Shopify app detector reads the code a store’s page sends to every visitor and matches it against known app fingerprints. Enter a store address above: ShopOpsy’s server loads that page, finds app embeds, theme app extension files and third-party scripts, and lists the apps it recognises (82 so far) by category. Apps that put no code on the storefront can’t be seen, so treat the list as a starting point.
How does Shopify app detection work?
Apps reach a storefront in a few ways, and each leaves traces in the page:
- Theme app extensions. Apps add app blocks inside page sections, and app embed blocks that Shopify injects before the closing
</head>or</body>tag. Files in an extension’s assets folder are served from Shopify’s CDN (theme app extension configuration). In page source they appear undercdn.shopify.com/extensions/, and the blocks are marked with comments that name the app, such asshopify://apps/<app-handle>/blocks/…. - Script tags. The ScriptTag API loads remote JavaScript into storefront pages. Shopify says apps that integrate with a theme and are submitted to the App Store must use theme app extensions instead, and that script tags only work with vintage themes (ScriptTag reference).
- Code pasted into the theme. Some services give merchants a snippet to add to theme files by hand.
The detector compares script hosts (for example static.klaviyo.com), app block handles and extension handles with its list of known apps. Handles it can’t match appear under Other app extensions found, so you can still see that an app is there and look it up.
How do you use the Shopify app detector?
- Enter a store’s home page or a product page. A bare domain such as
example.comworks. - Select Find apps. The check can take up to about 10 seconds. Recent checks are cached, so look at the time shown with the results.
- Read each category: the app’s name, the code that revealed it, and a link to its App Store listing when we have a verified one.
- Check a product page too. Reviews, size charts and back-in-stock forms often load only there.
- Select Check this store’s theme to run the same address through the Shopify theme detector.
How do you check a Shopify store’s apps manually?
- Read the page source. In Chrome, press Ctrl+U (⌘+Option+U on a Mac) to open the page’s HTML (Chrome keyboard shortcuts). Search it for
shopify://apps/andcdn.shopify.com/extensions/, then scan the<script src="…">addresses for vendor domains. - Watch the Network panel. Open DevTools, select Network and reload the page, because DevTools only logs requests while it’s open. Filter by JS and add the Domain column to see which companies’ servers the page calls (Inspect network activity).
- On your own store, check app embeds. In your Shopify admin, go to Online Store, click Edit theme, then the App embeds icon in the sidebar (Extend your theme with apps). App embeds stay off after an app is installed until they’re turned on there (theme app extension configuration).
Why can results be incomplete, or include apps a store no longer uses?
- Back-office apps leave no trace. Apps for inventory, fulfilment, accounting or reporting work in the admin and load nothing on the storefront, and checkout-only apps don’t either.
- App pixels run in a sandbox. Shopify loads app web pixels in a strict sandbox (Web Pixels API) rather than as ordinary page scripts, so tracking apps can be missed.
- One page at one moment. Apps that load on other pages, after cookie consent or after a click won’t show.
- Shared scripts. One vendor can serve several apps from the same script, so the detector may only be able to name the vendor.
- Leftover code. Shopify’s Help Center notes that some apps add code to a theme that isn’t removed automatically when the app is uninstalled (Uninstalling apps). A detected app may no longer be installed.
- Bot checks and password pages. When a store answers with a bot check or its password page, the detector says so instead of guessing.
What should you do with the results?
Treat them as leads for your own research:
- Compare, don’t copy. Open each listing and read the reviews and the Pricing section. Shopify’s Finding and choosing apps guide notes that most paid apps offer a free plan or a free trial, so you can test an app on your own store before paying.
- Audit your own storefront. Run your store and look for apps you’ve removed whose code still loads. Shopify suggests checking the app’s listing or contacting its developer about extra uninstall steps (Uninstalling apps).
- Check consent. If tracking or marketing scripts load on your store, the Shopify cookie banner guide explains which ones Shopify’s built-in banner covers and which it doesn’t.
- Stay fair. The detector reads only what any visitor’s browser receives. Use it to learn which tools exist, not to copy another store’s content or design, and don’t present a detected app as proof of what a store pays for.
Frequently asked questions
Will the store know I checked which apps it uses?
ShopOpsy’s server requests the page once and identifies itself as ShopOpsy’s store inspector, not as you. It doesn’t pass on your IP address, send cookies or log in, and it doesn’t run the page’s scripts. The store’s own server logs can still record that request, as they would any visit.
Why do I see different apps when I open the store myself?
The detector requests the page from ShopOpsy’s server and asks for English, so a store that changes its storefront by country, language or market can show it a different version than you see. Recent checks are also cached, so a result can be older than the store’s current page, and apps that wait for cookie consent, run A/B tests or load after you scroll or click may only appear in your own browser.
Can a Shopify store hide its apps from an app detector?
Not completely, because any code that runs in a visitor’s browser has to be downloaded first. But a script served from the store’s own domain, or merged into its theme files, carries no vendor name, so a detector can’t match it to an app. Apps that work only in the admin or at checkout never reach the storefront at all.
How do I find out which app is behind an unrecognised extension?
Use the Search the App Store link next to it. The name we show is built from a handle in the page’s code, which often resembles the app’s name, and the extension’s file names can point to the vendor too. On your own store, Settings > Apps in the Shopify admin lists the apps you’ve installed and uninstalled (Uninstalling apps).
Does the detector work on stores that aren’t on Shopify?
It only lists apps for Shopify storefronts. If the page has no Shopify storefront code, it tells you so instead of listing scripts, because a vendor’s script on another platform isn’t a Shopify app install. To confirm a store’s platform and theme first, use the Shopify theme detector.
