Shopify Tracking Number: How to Add, Edit or Fix Missing Tracking

How to add a tracking number to a Shopify order, edit it after fulfillment, add several numbers, set a custom tracking URL and fix tracking links that don’t work.

On this page

To add a tracking number in Shopify, open the order from Orders, click Mark as fulfilled, paste the carrier's number into the Tracking number field, check the carrier Shopify selects in Shipping carrier, and select Send a notification to the customer so the buyer gets a shipping confirmation email with the tracking link. If the order is already fulfilled, click Add tracking in its Fulfilled section instead. To fix a wrong number, use Edit tracking on the fulfillment; Shopify then sends a shipping update email unless you deselect the notification. For a carrier Shopify doesn't support, choose Other and enter the complete tracking URL.

These steps follow Shopify's guide to fulfilling orders as of October 2026; admin labels change from time to time. Shoppers looking for their own parcel can skip to the section for shoppers near the end. For how customers and merchants follow an order end to end, see our Shopify order tracking guide.

How do tracking numbers work in Shopify?

Shopify is not a carrier, so it doesn't create tracking numbers. The number comes from the carrier when a shipping label is made, whether you buy that label in Shopify, on the carrier's website or through an app. In Shopify, you attach the number to a fulfillment: the record of one shipment containing some or all of an order's items. One order can have several fulfillments, each with its own tracking.

Once a fulfillment has tracking, it shows up in four places:

  • Customer emails. The number appears in the shipping confirmation email and in shipping update emails.
  • The order status page. Customers can check the shipment there and, for supported carriers, see real-time location updates. Our guide to the Shopify order status page covers what customers see.
  • The Shop app. Orders from Shopify stores are added to Shop automatically when the order email matches the shopper's Shop account.
  • Your admin. The order page shows the number and, where the carrier supports it, the delivery status.

What the customer actually gets depends on how much Shopify knows about the shipment:

What Shopify hasWhat the customer seesWhat happens in your admin
A number, with no recognized carrier and no URLThe number, but no working linkNo delivery status; Mark as delivered stays available
A number plus a carrier on Shopify's list, or a URL you enteredA clickable tracking linkDelivery status only if Shopify tracks that carrier's delivery events
A carrier whose delivery status Shopify tracks, including labels bought in ShopifyThe link, status updates on the order status page, and Out for delivery and Delivered emailsStatus comes from the carrier; Mark as delivered is hidden

How to add a tracking number when you fulfill an order

Use this when you ship the order yourself with a label bought outside Shopify, for example on the carrier's website:

  1. From your Shopify admin, go to Orders and click the order.
  2. In the Unfulfilled or In progress section, click Mark as fulfilled.
  3. To ship only part of the order now, enter the item quantities you are sending.
  4. Paste the number into the Tracking number field. Shopify may recognize the format and select a carrier.
  5. Check the Shipping carrier drop-down. If it's empty or wrong, select the right carrier, or Other (see below).
  6. Select Send a notification to the customer to email the shipping confirmation. The option appears only when the order has an email address.
  7. Click Mark as fulfilled. The order status changes to Fulfilled.

In the Shopify mobile app the flow is the same, and you can scan the label's barcode into the Tracking number field instead of typing it.

Shopify won't add a tracking number to an order without a shipping address. And if you ship yourself, keep automatic fulfillment off in Settings > General > Order processing: Shopify's order processing guide advises against it for merchants who pack and ship their own products, because all new orders are marked as fulfilled.

Shopify keeps a list of tracking companies: more than 100 carriers available to every store, plus carriers shown only to stores in certain countries. When the carrier on a fulfillment is on that list, Shopify builds the tracking URL from the number for you. When no carrier is set, Shopify can guess one from the number's format.

Guessing is the weak point. Shopify's developer documentation for tracking input warns that different carriers can use similar-looking numbers and that a guess can produce an invalid tracking URL. Always look at the carrier Shopify picked before you save, especially with postal services and regional couriers.

A carrier being on the list also only means Shopify can build a link. The same documentation says it doesn't mean Shopify updates the shipment's delivery status automatically.

How do you use "Other" and a custom tracking URL?

If your carrier isn't fully supported, or you select Other in Shipping carrier, you can enter the tracking URL yourself. The order status page links to that URL, so:

  • Enter the complete URL, including the tracking digits the carrier gave you, not the carrier's home page or blank tracking form.
  • Find the format by tracking one parcel on the carrier's site and copying the address bar if the number appears in it, for example https://carrier.example/track?id=AB123456789 (a placeholder, not a real carrier).
  • Test it in a private browser window before you save, to make sure it opens that parcel.

If the carrier's site never puts the number in the address, link to its tracking page anyway. The customer can still copy the number from the shipping email.

How to add tracking to an order that's already fulfilled

Sometimes the number arrives after the order is marked fulfilled, for example after a bulk fulfillment or when a supplier ships for you. Shopify's steps are:

  1. Go to Orders and click the order.
  2. In the Fulfilled section that needs tracking, click Add tracking.
  3. Enter the number in Tracking number and check Shipping carrier.
  4. For more boxes in the same shipment, click Add another tracking number. All numbers in one fulfillment must use the same carrier.
  5. Leave Send a notification to the customer selected to send a shipping update email, or deselect it.
  6. Click Save.

How to edit a tracking number after fulfillment

To correct a typo, a wrong carrier or a reprinted label, edit the fulfillment's tracking rather than creating a new fulfillment. Shopify's customer notifications guide gives this path:

  1. Go to Orders and click the order.
  2. In the fulfillment's section, click the menu icon, then Edit tracking.
  3. Enter the new tracking details and check the carrier.
  4. Decide whether to keep Send notification email to customer selected.
  5. Click Save.

Is the customer notified again? Yes, by default. Shopify's Shipping update notification is sent when tracking information is updated on a fulfilled order, and the checkbox in step 4 is how you stop it. Send the update whenever the number itself changed, so the customer has the right one. Skip it for cosmetic fixes, such as correcting the carrier when the link already worked. Our guide to Shopify notifications covers editing the shipping confirmation and shipping update emails, and turning off the out for delivery and delivered emails.

Shopify doesn't document a separate way to delete tracking. One workaround, built from documented steps, is to cancel the fulfillment from the Fulfilled section's menu with Cancel fulfillment, which returns those items to Unfulfilled, then fulfill them again. If you bought the label in Shopify, void it first. If a fulfillment service is already working on the order, canceling in Shopify doesn't stop it, so contact the service.

How do you add multiple tracking numbers or ship an order in parts?

How you record several parcels depends on whether they travel together:

SituationWhat to do in ShopifyEmails the customer gets
Several boxes, same carrier, shipped togetherOne fulfillment, using Add another tracking numberOne shipping email
Boxes going with different carriersFulfill the items as separate fulfillments, each with its own carrierOne email per fulfillment
Some items now, the rest laterEnter partial quantities in Mark as fulfilled, then fulfill the rest when it shipsOne email per fulfillment
Order already split by checkoutFulfill each Unfulfilled section separately, or merge them first if they ship from the same locationOne email per fulfillment

Checkout splits an order into several fulfillments when no single location has all the stock, when items can't ship together (such as preorder items, subscriptions or products in different shipping profiles), or when the customer chose pickup for some items. Each fulfillment gets its own tracking and notification, so a customer can receive more than one shipping confirmation for one order. Say so in your shipping policy to head off "I only got half my order" emails. If you sell preorders, test a mixed cart first; our preorder setup checklist includes that check.

Splitting and merging fulfillments works on desktop or the web version of Shopify, not in the mobile app.

Do shipping labels bought in Shopify add tracking automatically?

Yes. When you buy a label in Shopify, you don't type a tracking number at all. Shopify says its shipping labels provide tracking information to customers automatically, and its fulfillment guide says the order is marked as fulfilled after you buy and print a label.

  • Notification timing. When you buy the label, the Shipping date field comes with a Send shipping information to customers checkbox that sends shipment details to the customer on that date. In the mobile app the option is Email details to customer now.
  • Delivery status. Go to Orders > Shipping labels to see each label's status: Picked up by carrier, In transit, Out for delivery, Delivered, Attempted delivery or Failed delivery, according to Shopify's label tracking guide. "No status yet" means the carrier hasn't scanned the parcel.
  • No manual delivery status. You can't mark these fulfillments as delivered yourself; the status comes from the carrier.

Buying labels in Shopify depends on your fulfillment location being eligible, and eligibility varies by carrier and country. Our guide to Shopify shipping labels covers buying, printing and voiding them.

Who adds tracking when an app, 3PL or supplier ships?

If someone else ships for you, who adds the tracking depends on how they are connected:

  • A fulfillment service with an app. You click Request fulfillment on the order and can select Send a notification to the customer when the fulfillment service fulfills the order. The service controls the status, so you can't mark the order fulfilled yourself. If it provides tracking, Shopify adds it to the order automatically, and you can still add or update tracking at any time.
  • A custom fulfillment service that receives orders by email. It doesn't update Shopify automatically, so ask for the number and add it when you mark the order fulfilled.
  • A supplier who emails you tracking numbers. Treat it like a label bought elsewhere: fulfill the items with the number, or add tracking to the fulfillment later.
  • A shipping label app. Check that the app writes the tracking number back to Shopify, and whether the customer gets Shopify's shipping email, the app's own email, or both.

Can you add tracking numbers in bulk?

Partly. Shopify's bulk fulfillment marks many orders as fulfilled at once (Orders, select the orders, then Mark as > Fulfilled), but its steps don't include tracking. Shopify's guide says to add tracking numbers manually afterwards, which means Add tracking on each order. Shopify's Help Center, checked in October 2026, doesn't describe a built-in CSV import for tracking numbers.

For higher volumes, the realistic options are:

  1. Buy labels in Shopify, individually or in bulk, so tracking is added with each label.
  2. Use a fulfillment service or label app that writes tracking back to Shopify.
  3. Use an app that imports tracking from a spreadsheet. Look in the Shopify App Store's orders and shipping categories, and test on a few orders before running a full file.
  4. Use the Admin API. Developers can create fulfillments with tracking (fulfillmentCreate) or change tracking later (fulfillmentTrackingInfoUpdate). In the update mutation, notifyCustomer must be set for the customer to be emailed; if it's left blank, no notification is sent. Send the carrier name exactly as it appears on Shopify's list, since capitalization matters, so Shopify can build the tracking URLs.

Customers who checked out with only a phone number can opt in to email shipping updates from the order status page.

ShopOpsy's Order Tracking app, which will give customers a tracking page in your store's design, is still in development and not yet on the Shopify App Store.

Where can shoppers find their tracking number?

Shopify is the software the store runs on, not the seller or the carrier, so it can't look up your parcel. Shopify's advice for shoppers is to contact the store directly. To find the number yourself:

  1. Search your inbox for the store's shipping confirmation or shipping update email. The tracking number and link are in it.
  2. Open the order confirmation email and click View your order. The order status page shows tracking once the store adds it.
  3. If you use the Shop app with the same email address, check its Orders tab.

No tracking yet usually means the store hasn't shipped, or used a shipping method without tracking. Our Shopify order tracking guide covers customer accounts, the Shop app and what to do when a store doesn't reply.

Frequently asked questions

Can I see proof that a parcel was delivered?

For some carriers, such as FedEx, Shopify shows a Proof of delivery photos section on delivered fulfillments when the carrier took a photo. Photos stay on the order for up to 90 days, and with Shopify Payments some are added to chargeback responses automatically.

What if I shipped an order without tracking?

Once the customer has the parcel, click Mark as delivered in the Fulfilled section. Shopify says this updates the customer's order status page and customer account to show the order as delivered.
